In modern conversation, this phrase is generally used in a light-hearted,
humorous way when two (or more) people make the same choice or share a similar opinion on something.
There are some days that you and your best friend show up wearing the same outfit: black jeans, plain tee, and a denim button down tied around your waists…. What can you say: “great minds think alike!”
In modern conversation, this phrase is generally used in a light-hearted, humorous way when two (or more) people make the same choice or share a similar opinion on something.
It is said in a way that congratulates others for being as smart as you are! ;P
But that’s because times have changed. As it turns out, we have all been using this phrase incorrectly. The full Greek proverb from which this phrase / idiom comes, is as follows: “Great minds think alike, though fools seldom differ.” This suggests that the people that reached the same conclusion as you may not be as smart as you think!
This version of the phrase was not used so much for humorous relief, as it was to teach a lesson.* Leave it to the ancient Greeks to encourage critical thinking and independent thought. Leave it to us modern Americans to try and make that funny.
